Celebrating Women in Design and Construction
This week I (Emma) attended a lecture, Blueprint for Success: Breaking into Architecture and Construction, the ultimate session of the all-day conference “Celebration of Women in Design” held at the NY Design Center.
Four women working in the luxury residential space sat on the panel, representing design, architecture, and construction. Next year, I hope to see an engineer up there!
My key takeaways:
When establishing yourself on a job site, lean into curiosities by asking questions
Harness the power of patience and pause
Find a mentor
Get involved in events to meet others in your industry to build network
Read the article Room at the Top for a perspective on implicit bias (or the summary of it that I could find and share here)
Confidence comes through experience
Let your work speak for itself
Love what you do
Pick up the phone, especially when it comes to delivering news (total transparency is key)
Good communication means over communication from the start of a project
It’s okay to admit that you don’t have an answer on-hand but will find out
Once you have general knowledge you become even a better sponge
When it comes to finding confidence to excel in unknown, lean into curiosity rather than fear
Build a business like you build a house - start with a strong foundation
Make mistakes, but don’t repeat mistakes
If any takeaway resonates with you or if you have any advice to add, I’d love to know.

The Brutalist somehow manages to get the architecture all wrong…The Brutalist won a trio of Oscars, but it failed to say anything meaningful about architecture, writes Edwin Heathcote.
